Selecting an Heirloom Clock

The joy and desire of a lifetime . . . an heirloom clock for generations to come..

Style
Traditionally, styles were limited to pinch waist, long case clocks with finial tops. Today there are many styles, shapes, and sizes, so that the major style distinction is the straight sided style and the pinch waist style. These can come in a variety of sizes and fashions from country French or early American to contemporary or even ultra-modern. Even though it is not necessary to match your clock to your furniture, there are enough styles and finishes to choose from, either as complimentary or contrasting factors.

Size
Historically, houses were much larger and catered to massive furniture. Today's grandfather clocks are built to fit comfortably in any size dwelling. They take up minimal floor space and are versatile enough to create a variety of effects.
Finish
Floor clocks come in a multitude of finishes. The most popular woods are pine, oak, cherry, mahogany, and burl veneers. Generally, other special decorative finishes can be arranged.

Location In Home
One of the magnificent features of the grandfather clock is that they can be used in a great variety of ways. It makes an impressive welcoming statement in the foyer and adds a touch of elegance in the living room or dining room. These however, are not the only locations for a grandfather clock, although they are the most traditional. Grandfather clocks have great design potential. They can create a dramatic effect and make ceilings appear taller and can make a large room seem cozier. They can be placed in the space between two windows, in a corner, used as a room divider, or on the landing of a stairway. The possibilities are endless. The ultimate purpose of a grandfather clock is to give pleasure and the clock should be placed where it will best serve you and your family.
Movements
There are two major types of movements available. There is the tubular bell movement and the rod chime movement. The tubes sound high pitches, rather like a carillon of church bells. The rod chime is deeper with a bass sounding resonance. The clocks come either with chains (to pull the weights up with) or cable drive (which is wound with a key).
Chimes
There are six popular chimes available in various combinations. They are the famous Westminster Chime, Whittington, St. Michael, Winchester, Canterburv and Ave Maria. These come in combinations of single, double or triple chimes. The chimes provide a melodious background of comfort and grace to enhance any activity or lifestyle.
Moon Dial
Many grandfather clocks today come with a moon dial. Traditionally, the moon dial was more relied upon than the actual clock. Its purpose was to show the various phases of the moon, or its position in the sky at all times. Farmers relied upon this information for planting their crops. Sailors and fishermen used this information in their trades as well. During the full moon, many people would make long journeys and shorten traveling time.
The moon dial, once set, will then automatically turn with the functioning of the clock. It will not only remind you of nostalgia, it will interest your children in becoming more aware of the changing skies and nature.
